Unaccompanied tour of the medieval garden

The Haut-Koenigsbourg medieval garden is located outside the southern wall of the fortress.

Created at the beginning of the 21st century for educational purposes, the 600m² garden was replanted in 2023 and 2024.

In keeping with medieval tradition, it is protected by fences and hedges. Everything is perfectly structured with pathways, geometric flowerbeds and green constructions.

Arranged in themed areas, a collection of almost 200 plants illustrates the important role played by plants in medieval life. Medicinal herbs, magic plants and poisons were used for healing and protection. The kitchen garden is home to cabbages, spinach, peas, onions, turnips and other root crops, the star vegetables of the period. Appreciated for their fragrance, beauty and symbolism, flowers and fruit abounded in the orchard of love, not far from the utilitarian plants used for textiles and hygiene.

Not forgetting the charm of the roses, peonies and lilies, grown close to arbours, benches and seats for relaxing.

The garden is freely accessible during the day, and can be discovered as the seasons change.

At the entrance to the garden, an 8-panel exhibition explains the gardens of the Middle Ages.
