Eco-friendly action

As the castle is a tourist attraction, it is obviously desirable that the public should come and visit it. Given that it is located on top of a mountain, access to the site - whether for the public, the staff or suppliers - is virtually impossible except by motor vehicle. This road traffic has a generally negative impact and creates many issues: the emission of large quantities of greenhouse gases, the difficulties involved in managing the car parks and access to the site etc. It became a matter of some urgency for the Haut-Koenigsbourg to consider how the impact of this road traffic could be minimized, what alternative transport solutions could be promoted and how the site could be made more accessible. As a direct result, the Haut-Koenigsbourg shuttle bus service (Réseau Fluo Grand Est 67's n° 500 service) was launched in 2008. It runs between the Haut-Koenigsbourg massif and Sélestat train station. There are also several marked, well-maintained walking trails, including the GR (Grande Randonnée long-distance path) that runs past the foot of the mountain on which the castle is located.
